I think the main difference between the 'old school' Ambient and a lot of the 90's stuff was the fact that it wasn't always beatless anymore
Moving away from the 'treated piano' of Eno and the subtle washes of cosmic sounds served up by Steve Roach, the bands of the 90's turned to heavy use of 'sampler technology'
I'd say that 'Little Fluffy Clouds' by 'The Orb' pretty much summed up the vibe of the time; cool, subtle, even dub rhythms and beats fused with unusual vocal samples
Some of the albums listed may not fall into the 'traditional' idea of Ambient but I don't like over categorising so it's close enough!
My top 3 would have to be 'Lifeforms', 'Selected Ambient...' and 'Chill Out' but I wish I could put '76:14' in there too! They are all truly outstanding
